Lincoln Jails and Prisons

Lincoln County, Arkansas, has three jails and prisons, namely:

  • Lincoln County Jail in Star City
  • Varner Unit in Grady
  • Cummins Unit in Grady.

The main jail in Lincoln is Lincoln County Jail, located at the County seat, Star City. Lincoln County Jail holds

  • Short-term offenders
  • Offenders who have been arrested and are awaiting to be released on bond
  • Offenders who can’t afford bail and are awaiting trial
  • Inmates who have already been convicted of a crime and imprisoned to a term of less than one year.

Many of the incarcerated inmates become workers allowing them to reduce their sentences by performing jail maintenance or working in the kitchen. One advantage of working is that the facility pays a small stipend, so they have a few dollars in their pocket when released.

The jail is a medium security level jail that gives reintegration programs to all its inmates. Inmates serving more than one year get transfers to the Arkansas Department of Corrections or the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Annually Lincoln County Jail gets 440 bookings. Inmates incarcerated in the facility include misdemeanor and violent offenders who’ve committed crimes like murder, rape, and murder.

The facility has a sophisticated locking system and CCTV coverage of all areas used by inmates. The jail staff has communication equipment that keeps every team member in constant communication.

Verner Unit in Grandy is the only facility with a Supermax unit in Lincoln County and Arkansas. The facility holds the most notorious inmates, including death row inmates.

Verner Unit has several programs for all its inmates. Some programs include basic education skills, GED programs, and vocational training. Inmates also get industrial and agricultural job training as part of the programs. Other programs include:

  • Substance abuse treatment programs
  • Principles and Applications for Life program: inmates get to experiment with different life choices and apply them in personal situations.
  • Mental health classes
  • Think Legacy program: offers a space for inmates nearing their release who help each other out, and the public manages their growth, personal goals, and financial literacy.

Cummins Unit houses minimum, medium, and maximum security inmates. Mental health inmates have separate cell blocks where they receive specialized treatment.

Similar to other facilities, Cummins Unit offers programs to its inmates. Some unique programs include:

  • Horse stable operations that teach inmates how to work with horses.
  • A canine unit that teaches inmates how to deal with dogs.

This facility believes that working with animals helps inmates socialize and give them the urge to study.
