Independence ranks 51 out of 75 counties in Arkansas State, with several jails and prisons managed under the County Sheriff’s Department.
Main County Jail
Independence County Detention Unit serves from West Main Street in Batesville City. It has been the central county jail housing sentenced offenders, probation violators, and those awaiting trial since 1986. The medium security level facility has a 99-bed capacity; today, it admits over 1600 offenders yearly.
Friends and families can access the jail’s public records stored and maintained by the sheriff’s office, such as:

The correctional facility only allows pre-approved persons to visit the inmates at scheduled intervals. For example, all misdemeanor inmates will receive visitors on Sundays from 8.30 to 11.30 and 12.30 to 1.45 pm. The felony inmate guests will visit on Saturdays using similar timings.

About County Sheriff’s Office and Police
The Independence County sheriff’s department has over 28 officers led by Sheriff Shawn Stephens. The unit’s principal duty is to ensure every citizen follows the state, local, and federal laws. Other functions include:

Independence was the ninth county of the Arkansas State, formed from Lawrence County in 1820. Batesville serves as its capital city and county seat.
